Best Over the Ear Headphones

Wireless headphones allow you to listen to podcasts and music without the need to connect an audio wire to your device. They are also a great choice for public transportation, at work, or at home.

Wireless over-ear headphones may have an elegant design and outstanding noise cancellation. They usually come with a stylish storage case.

Soundcore Life Q30

A major improvement over the Soundcore Life 2 from late-2018, these over-ears look better, feel sturdier, and are generally more polished. They're still largely plastic but the hinges are a bit more secure and the soft protein leather ear cups are bigger. You can replace the 3.5mm cord for a higher quality USB-C cable to make use of them with mobile Hi-Res as well as stationary players. They also come with dual built-in microphones, which work well in our tests for FaceTime, Skype, and Microsoft Teams calls.

The Soundcore app has a huge selection of EQ presets, which can be customized and saved to listen to music and podcasts in the way you prefer. The Soundcore app makes it easy to use and sets these headphones apart.

When ANC is on the Q30's 40mm drivers eliminate most ambient noise, and provide excellent listening. They have a natural sound signature that is a bit on the treble side, and some might feel is lacking in bass response (we have had better results using the Bass Booster EQ preset). But, you can solve this issue by using the Soundcore app, as there is an 8-band equalizer that can help you tweak.

The headphones feature a power button and pairing button on the left ear cup as well as the USB-C port for charging. The right ear cup has play/pause and the volume up and down buttons. By double-clicking these controls, you can skip tracks or repeat the previous one. They also support a voice command that allows you to ask to change the mode or set an alarm. The right earcup can also be covered with your hand to activate ambient mode to allow you to hear what's happening around you, without removing the headphones.

The battery life of these headphones is great, too. In our tests with ANC switched on the Q30 lasted nearly an hour longer than its rivals. This allows you to enjoy a long flight, or a full day at work. The USB-C cord included in the kit allows you to quickly charge the batteries.  best wireless over ear headphones 'll also receive an alert when the battery is nearing empty.

Focal Bathys Wireless

Focal's Bathys Wireless is a pair of high-quality over-ear Bluetooth headphones that offers both active noise cancellation as well as Bluetooth playback. These headphones are made to be high-end, premium headphones that can be used at home or on the move. The headphones are a higher priced than comparable headphones, but their outstanding audio quality is what makes them stand out.

The Focal Bathys come in a slim, compact and attractive, white, fabric-finished box with all the accessories you require inside. The headphone carry case folds flat, and comes with a case, USB-C to USB cable, 1.2mm SE cable and an audio adapter.

The battery's 600mAh capacity will last for a whole day of casual listening. They also come with an audio input that you can connect wired. Wirelessly, they are paired via Bluetooth. You can control their functions with an app (now called Focal and Naim in line with English Naim's products that are network-aware) or the button on the left earcup that scrolls through ANC profiles such as'silent,'soft  transparent,' and 'full.

The app lets you alter various settings, including the brightness of the LEDs as well as the EQ presets (including the music profile, which sounds brighter and neutraler than other profiles) and the battery life. It also lets you to choose the ANC mode and its level, as well as setting an 'acoustic' setting which adjusts the sensitivity of your audio to simulate what it would sound like when used in a space with different soundproofing.

The Focal Bathys have an incredibly bass-rich profile that gives more warmth and punch to your favourite tracks. In the end, vocals and instruments are nudged back in the mix and sound muffled, while details like cymbals are slightly less prominent than you might expect on some other headphones. They're not as efficient in active noise cancellation contrasted with other headphones that have higher-end technology like the Sony WH-1000XM5 or Apple AirPods Max.

Sony WH-1000XM5

Sony has earned a reputable reputation for its headphones, and the WH-1000XM5 is not an exception. It is at the top end of the mainstream over-ear headphone market, edging into the 'luxury lifestyle' sector where brands like Bang & Olufsen, Apple and Montblanc are a common sight. The XM5s are expensive in price tag, but when you can afford it, there are a few more superior wireless over-ear headphones out there.

The XM5s have a lot of features that make life easier for the listener, and also automate tasks that they would have to do manually. Sony's DSEE Extreme Engine (which upscales music compressed to near hi-res) and Bluetooth's LDAC Technology, are both included. This lets high-quality music to be streamed at bitrates which are higher than Bluetooth. It also has a built-in microphone for making hands-free phone calls.

Similar to the previous generation of WH headphones the XM5s excel at noise cancellation. They're among the best at reducing the constant drones that are heard in underground and train carriages. The XM5s are also excellent at isolating the listener from the hum of busy streets and airports.

The sound quality is very good. The XM5s aren't as detailed in the low frequencies as the XM4, however, they have a higher level of clarity and realism, too. For example, the bass work on Rage Against the Machine's Bullet in the Head flexes the Sonys' muscles with real force and definition, without reducing everything else. The XM5s also have the ability to provide precise and accurate bass notes in Massive Attack's Angel.

Battery life is great with up to 30 hours of listening time when ANC is in use and 40 hours if off. This is plenty for a weekend trip or a long period of use.

The XM5s do not come with waterproof or dust-proof. In fact, Sony recommends that you not sweat on them or take them out in the rain. This might not be a major issue for the majority of people, but for those who spend long hours in the gym or live in a rainy region it could be a significant issue.

Apple AirPods Max

The Apple AirPods Max are a pair of wireless headphones over-ear equipped with Bluetooth technology and noise cancelling. Apple created dynamic drivers measuring 40mm, with a neutral sound profile that focuses on highs and mids without going too loud. They are ideal for music and movies. They also offer better sound quality than many other headphones.

The headphones are light and feel comfortable on the head. The ear cups are made of memory foam, are covered with woven fabric and sit comfortably over the ears, do not put pressure on the sides or the forehead. The ear cups can also be tilted and rotated to accommodate different head shapes. The hinges that are spring loaded have a solid but not overly robust clamping force that ensures that the ear cups stay in place during listening sessions.

Toggle noise cancelling mode by pressing a small button on the top of the right earcup. You can also use an earphone-style jog dial with a push button similar to the digital crown on the Apple Watch. You can turn it around to control volume, and press it once three, twice, or times to playback the controls. Pressing and holding the button will activate Siri. The buttons are simple to use and well-placed but I would have liked to see a power button that would shut off the headphones when they are not in use. The headphones automatically switch to standby mode when removed from your ears or placed in their case. They only come back on when you slide them over your head once more.

Spatial audio is a cool feature. It utilizes accelerometers, gyroscopes, and iPhones and iPads to determine where you are moving. Then, it adjusts the sound to make it seem to be coming from that location. This creates a theater-like experience with movies and videos made in Dolby Atmos, 5.1 or 7.1. The only downside is that spatial audio requires an iOS device to be used and you won't be able experience it on other devices.

The AirPods Max are a decent pair of headphones, but I'd feel a bit ripped off walking into an Apple Store and spending $549 on them if I knew they'd be outdone in a year by the second-generation model. The AirPods Pro have more advanced features and a better battery performance, making it hard to justify the extra expense for most people.
